Surge Into Madness

It’s not the same policy with a surge of additional troops we are assured. Rather, it’s a whole new policy with additional troops.

Need I belabor the fact that we are sending even more of our nation’s finest into a quagmire?!

Things will would be much worse if we just pulled our troops is what we are being told.

Let me offer an argument as blunt as those who argue with me on the finer points: Who cares! It’s not our problem. We accomplished what we went there to do (minus the fact that there seems to have been no WMD’s...and no Al Queda connection).

Saddam’s dead. Trials continue for others. There is at least some form of (more or less) democratically elected government.

Let’s just leave!

Let’s focus on what we have been very bad at recently: Diplomacy.

For those of you cringing; the armed forces will still be as available as they are at the present. They won’t just disappear.

The United States is so far into debt on this whole fiasco, that it will take generations to recover. That is not an exaggeration. I am referring to the monetary issues alone. To establish global goodwill can be accomplished more quickly (relatively), but for most of us, our grandchildren will still be paying for this horrific mistake.

We can work towards a peaceful Middle East without troops on the ground. After exiting Iraq and agreeing to comprehensive dialogue with Iran, we can start by cutting monetary aid to Israel (at least until the Palestinian situation can be resolved). I’m a big fan of a firm reestablishment of 1967 borders and full compliance with all U.N. resolutions.

How realistic is the above? Very...if the entire population got behind it. Actually, I doubt any of the above will come to pass any time in the near future. And considering how many politicians accept very large amounts Israeli-based lobbying funding, don’t count on this starting at the political level.

Think about it. There is a president that has verifiably lied the country to war, who is now saying that he will do as he wishes, despite anything the congress has to say about it. If I were talking about a South American country, we’d be ready to send in forces to restore democracy.

I’m talking about the United States of America.
